Clemson defensive tackle Vic Burley was arrested early Saturday morning by the Clemson University Police Department and charged with public disorderly conduct, the program announced. Head coach Dabo Swinney suspended the senior from the team indefinitely the same afternoon, saying in a statement, “We are extremely disappointed by his actions and decisions.” A charge is an accusation, not a conviction, and Burley is entitled to due process.
The timing, from a football standpoint, is brutal. Burley, a former top recruit entering his fourth year and working his way back from injury, had been one of the standouts of the spring game and was widely expected to take a real step forward in 2026. More to the point: the defensive tackle spot is the one place on this loaded front where Clemson has been openly searching for someone to seize the job. Swinney has spent camp saying the interior is still looking for its alpha, with Burley battling alongside transfer Andy Burburija and rising sophomore Amare Adams for that role. Everywhere else on this defense, the alphas are established: Will Heldt and Jahiem Lawson on the edges, Sammy Brown behind them, a rebuilt secondary with real leaders. The middle was the open question. It just got more open.
