I’m not going to sugarcoat this one, because you watched it too. LSU 51, Clemson 10. The worst loss of the Dabo Swinney era. The worst loss this program has taken since 2000. And honestly, the part that hurts the most is that it wasn’t a fluke and it wasn’t effort. We got physically beat, and everybody watching knew it by halftime.
It all started up front. LSU ran for 309 yards on us. Sam Leavitt had 113 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, and Dilin Jones, a transfer, had 113 and two more. Dabo said it himself after the game: you’re not going to win if you can’t stop the run, and we could not set an edge all night, especially against the quarterback run. On the other side of it, our offense ran for 40 yards on 26 carries. At one point we were at negative 10 rushing yards. They had 38 first downs. We had 8. That’s not just a bad night. They were the better team, and it wasn’t close.
And here’s what I need to say, with all the respect in the world for Dabo Swinney. Two national championships. A ten year dynasty. A culture I genuinely love. But this wasn’t a one game problem. I think this is a talent problem that’s been building for about six years now, and Saturday night it showed up on the scoreboard in a way that nobody can explain away anymore.
Just look at how the two rosters were built. LSU used every avenue there is to get players. High school, the transfer portal, all of it. They almost had NFL players out there, and Kiffin even joked about it at halftime. Clemson’s model is to recruit high school kids, develop them, and stay loyal to them. To death do us part, like Dabo says. And I love that about him. I really do. But we watched a young, inexperienced offensive line get moved around all game. We watched safeties out of position. We watched Vizzina and Tait Reynolds never get a chance to build drives because the front couldn’t hold up. Vizzina went 10 of 16 for 83 yards. I don’t think that’s on the quarterbacks. They never had a chance back there. At some point you have to ask the question: is it an evaluation problem or is it a coaching problem? Because guys we developed are playing well at other places. Stephiylan Green was standing on that sideline Saturday night, and our guys up front weren’t ready.
So where does this go from here? Best case, we take care of Georgia Southern, beat North Carolina at home, win at Cal, and we’re sitting at 3-1 feeling a little better. But Miami is coming. And here’s the hard truth: we can’t pick up players in the middle of the season. The roster we have is the roster we’re riding with. So the fix right now has to come from coaching, from scheme, and from these young guys up front growing up fast. The bigger fix, going out and getting experienced linemen through the portal, is an offseason conversation. But if the front doesn’t improve with what we have, I think the playoff conversation could be over before October even gets here.
In my personal opinion, I’m not calling for anybody’s job, and I never will. Who am I to judge a Hall of Fame career off one night? But I am calling for change. There’s a saying I believe in: if you’re not growing, you’re dying. And unless something changes with the rules of this sport, the develop only model is fighting uphill against programs using every tool they can. I think Clemson has a couple of years to adapt, really adapt, or nights like Saturday stop being shocking and start being normal. And I refuse to accept a version of Clemson football where 51-10 is normal.
Like Dabo said, the best thing about that game is that it’s over. What happens next is what I’ll be watching. Go Tigers.
